KNOWN EFFECTS

  • Delays or stops blood clotting.
  • Acts as anti-coagulant. Coumarin interferes with synthesis of vitamin K in the human intestines. The absence of adequate vitamin K prevents blood clotting.

    Miscellaneous information:

  • The tonka bean was once a common adulterant of vanilla extracts.
  • Is used as flavoring in tobacco.
  • FDA has banned its use as a flavoring agent in foods.

  • Prevents clotting in deep veins.
  • Prevents blood clots from breaking away from blood vessels and lodging in vital organs, such as lung or brain. Its use must be monitored carefully with frequent laboratory studies (prothrombin time).
