PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING DIET
General guidelines for you or your daughter during pregnancy:
Increase your normal caloric intake about 10% above what you should normally consume if you were not pregnant.
Except under unusual circumstances, don't try to lose weight during pregnancy. The average weight gain in an uncomplicated pregnancy is 22 to 27 pounds.
Make sure your diet contains adequate protein during pregnancy and during breast-feeding. Protein is the "building block" of body tissue.
Iron, vitamins, minerals, and calcium supplements are helpful to maintain proper nutrition. Follow your doctor's recommendations. Remember that calcium tablets are not a substitute for milk.
Use iodized salt.
Avoid caffeine during pregnancy. Either eliminate coffee, cola, cocoa, tea, and other caffeine-containing substances from your diet, or reduce the amount you consume drastically.
