Uses

    Decreases the risk of stroke in patients who have warning signs of stroke or who have had strokes caused by blood clots.

Dosage & Usage Information

How to take:
Tablets--Swallow with liquid. If you can't swallow whole, crumble tablet and take with liquid or food.

When to take:
Twice a day with food as directed.

If you forget a dose:
Take as soon as you remember up to 2 hours late. If more than 2 hours, wait for next scheduled dose (don't double this dose).

What drug does:
Inhibits the clumping of platelets and thereby prevents blood clotting.

Time lapse before drug works:
2 hours.

Don't take with:
Any other drugs (particularly aspirin) without consulting doctor or pharmacist.


Overdose

SYMPTOMS:
Bloody vomit or excessive bleeding from gums, nose or rectum.

WHAT TO DO:

    Dial 911 (emergency) or O (operator) for an ambulance or medical help. Then give first aid immediately.

Possible Adverse Reactions or Side Effects

Life-threatening:

    None expected.

Common:

  • Diarrhea, elevated level of cholesterol in blood.
  • Nausea, skin rash, abdominal pain.

Infrequent:

  • Unusual bleeding or bruising.
  • Headache.

Rare:

  • Sore throat, mouth ulcers, fever, chills.
  • Dizziness, loss of appetite, gaseousness.

Warnings & Precautions

Don't take if:

  • You are allergic to ticlopidine.
  • You have reduced white blood cells (neutropenia).

Before you start, consult your doctor:

  • If you have liver disease, kidney disease, peptic ulcers or diverticulitis.
  • If you have any bleeding disorder.

Over age 60:
No special problems expected.

Pregnancy:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Consult doctor.

Breast-feeding:
Safety not established. Consult doctor.

Infants & children:
Not recommended. Safety has not been established.

Prolonged use:
No special problems expected.

Skin & sunlight:
No special problems expected.

Driving, piloting or hazardous work:
Don't drive or pilot aircraft until you learn how the medicine affects you. Don't work around dangerous machinery. Don't climb ladders or work in high places.

Discontinuing:
No special problems expected.

Others:

  • Advise any doctor or dentist whom you consult that you take this medicine. This is particularly important if any surgery is scheduled.
  • May affect results of some medical tests.
  • Report any unusual bleeding to your doctor.
