Uses
- Prevents breast fullness in new mothers after childbirth.
- Relieves menopause symptoms such as unnecessary sweating, hot
flashes, chills, faintness and dizziness.
Dosage & Usage Information
How to take:
Given by injection, deeply intramuscular.
When to take:
When directed.
If you forget a dose:
Check with your doctor.
What drug does:
Restores normal estrogen level in tissues.
Stimulates cells that produce male sex characteristics.
Replaces hormones lost due to deficiencies.
Stimulates red blood cell production.
Suppresses production of estrogen.
Time lapse before drug works:
10 to 20 days.
Don't take with:
Any other medicine without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Overdose
SYMPTOMS:
Headache (severe), coordination loss, vision changes,
chest pain, shortness of breath (sudden), speech slurring.
WHAT TO DO:
Overdose unlikely to threaten life. If person takes much larger
amount than prescribed, call doctor, poison-control center or
hospital emergency room for instructions.
Possible Adverse Reactions or Side Effects
Life-threatening:
- In case of overdose, see Overdose section.
- Hives, black stool, Discontinue. Seek
black or bloody vomit, emergency treatment.
intense itching,
weakness, loss of
consciousness.
Common:
- Red or flushed face;
rash; swollen, tender
breasts.
- Depression, irritability,
dizziness, confusion,
acne or oily skin,
enlarged clitoris, deepened
voice, appetite loss,
increased sex drive,
unnatural hair growth,
headache,
constipation.
Infrequent:
- Nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, unusual
vaginal bleeding or
discharge,
uncontrolled muscle
movements.
- Swollen feet and ankles,
migraine headache.
Rare:
- Jaundice, abdominal
pain.
- Brown blotches on skin;
hair loss; sore throat,
fever, mouth sores.
Warnings & Precautions
Don't take if:
- You are allergic to any male hormone or any estrogen-
containing drugs.
- You have impaired liver function.
- You have had blood clots, stroke or heart attack.
- You have unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Before you start, consult your doctor:
- If you might be pregnant or plan to become pregnant within 3
months.
- If you have heart disease, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, liver
disease, high blood pressure, asthma, congestive heart failure,
kidney disease or gallstones.
- If you have a high level of blood calcium.
- If you have had migraine headaches, epilepsy or porphyria.
- If you have had cancer of breast or reproductive organs,
fibrocystic breast disease, fibroid tumors of the uterus or
endometriosis.
Over age 60:
- May stimulate sexual activity.
- Can make high blood pressure or heart disease worse.
- Controversial. You and your doctor must decide if drug risks
outweigh benefits.
Pregnancy:
Risk to unborn child outweighs drug benefits. Don't use.
Breast-feeding:
Drug passes into milk. Avoid drug or discontinue nursing until
you finish medicine. Consult doctor for advice on maintaining
milk supply.
Infants & children:
Not recommended.
Prolonged use:
- Increased growth of fibroid tumors of uterus.
- Possible kidney stones.
- Unnatural hair growth and deep voice in women.
- Talk to your doctor about the need for follow-up medical
examinations or laboratory studies to check pap smear, liver
function, mammogram, complete blood counts (white blood cell
count, platelet count, red blood cell count, hemoglobin,
hematocrit).
- Possible breast lumps, jaundice, sore throat, fever. If any of
these occur, call your doctor.
Skin & sunlight:
May cause rash or intensify sunburn in areas exposed to sun or
sunlamp.
Driving, piloting or hazardous work:
No problems expected.
Discontinuing:
You may need to discontinue estrogens periodically. Consult
your doctor.
Others:
- In rare instances, may cause blood clot in lung, brain or leg.
Symptoms are SUDDEN severe headache, coordination loss, vision
change, chest pain, breathing difficulty, slurred speech, pain
in legs or groin. Seek emergency treatment immediately.
- Will not increase strength in athletes.
- Carefully read the paper delivered with your prescription
called "Information for the Patient."
- Don't smoke.
